Lakewood area pet hospital discusses surgical protocols

Posted by

Pet Surgical Protocols from Dr. Jose Arambulo, Bloomfield Animal Hospital
Dr. Jose Arambulo and the team of Bloomfield Animal Hospital in Lakewood, California take their jobs very seriously. They provide only the best for you and your pet. This includes following appropriate surgical protocols set forth by the AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association). This organization is a voluntary accreditation program that we have been a part of since 2011. Accreditation demonstrates we follow high standards in our surgical procedures.

Surgical protocols

Some of the protocols followed in our practice include:
  • Physical assessment and examination to determine the pet’s current health to ensure a surgery is appropriate. This includes reviewing the pet’s medical and vaccination history to make sure it is all up-to-date.
  • Body temperature and respiration are checked when the pet arrives for their procedure to administer sedation. Anesthetics and pain management are administered through an IV port and with the help of a veterinarian professional on staff.
  • Our team combines anesthetics, sedation, and medication for pain management before and during the surgical procedure for comfort and safety.
  • We utilize a heated table for managing temperature during the procedure. This is part of a safe and effective recovery, so pets are kept warm throughout the process.
  • We monitor vital signs continuously. We utilize this by using an ECG, pulse oximeter, capnography, IV fluids, thermometer and blood pressure. This is continued until the patient is recovered from anesthetics and begins the post-surgical healing process.
  • The area is properly dressed for promotion of healing and reduction of inflammation and trauma. We offer post-operative care and instructions when the pet returns home with pain management medications.
