Pets of the Homeless

As a pet owner, you probably share our conviction that every companion animal deserves affection, a full belly, and medical care. Approximately 20 percent of our nation's homeless population is in California; nearly 13,000 in Los Angeles alone. For those individuals, each day is a struggle to find enough to eat. For a homeless person, a pet may be a lifeline to interaction, companionship, protection, and the amazing healing power of love. Just like anyone else, the homeless develop deep bonds with their pets, and often go without, to give what little food they have to their best friends. Bloomfield Animal Hospital is helping, through Pets of the Homeless, and we encourage you to lend a hand, too.

There is only one animal aid organization in this country focused solely on providing food and emergency veterinary care to pets of the homeless – Pets of the Homeless. This non-profit group helps homeless women and men keep their animals, and maybe have a little more to eat themselves.

Throughout the week, Bloomfield Animal Hospital serves as a collection site for donations of pet food from clients, our own staff, and the public. Every Tuesday, in cooperation with the City of Lakewood Meals on Wheels program, pet food donations are distributed to their low income seniors.

We have participated in the Pets of the Homeless cause for several years, donating 50 to 60 pounds of pet food each week, through the generous support of caring people just like you. The feeling is incredibly rewarding. Organizing a pet food collection drive is also a strong bonding experience to share with your children, and makes a great senior or scouting project.

Please consider dropping off a donation the next time you stop by Bloomfield Animal Hospital for an appointment, or are in the Lakewood, CA area. You will be helping a fellow animal lover provide for his or her companion.

Call (562) 383-7788 to become a Bloomfield Animal Hospital client, so that your best friend will have the best in preventive treatments, nutritious foods, and surgical and emergency care. We also offer grooming, and the convenience of on-site and on-line pharmacies.
